Our Capoeria Program
Its unique blend of various techniques from its beginnings has formed into two different styles of Capoeira : Angola and Regional. In its early beginnings it appeared to be a harmless dance, the dancers or "Capoeiristas" were practicing deadly fighting techniques. In secrecy for the many revolts during brazils slavery period , to the different revolts of the dictatorship (in 1967)of the Brazilian government. Our Group was formed back in 1993, when I was teaching and living in Dallas, Texas. Since I had opened up the second Savate school in the United States I had many students of different places coming to train with us. I had a business associate who was Brazilian tell me if his Father-N-Law could come and work out with us. When he Showed up he talked about Capoeria and started to move his nickname as we called him was "pastor", who was a student of Mestre Bola Sete of Bahia.
The group was small and when he left
Mestra Edna Lima gave her helping hand in 1994.
Soon after Mestre Acordeon, Mestre Jelon and Mestre Bom Jesus helped in the creation and formation of the group.
Which was the first movement of
Capoeira in Texas since Mestre Acordeon's Shows back in 1975. Mestre Acordeon was after befriending other mestres was the one who helped us in an open arm tutelage and admiration to the group and understanding its focal points. His keen eye was the reason why we continued the work of capoeira and he developed a mentor relationship that has lasted.
Lalo who I consider
my brother , shared his time and devotion to Capoeira. Lalo and I worked on the
different toques of the birimbau looking for the older tunes within the old
music of various mestres of the past. We talked about the the different
ideologies of the past to the modern groups and grew within our capoeira.
We are grateful to those Mestres and Mestra for sharing their abilities and working with a group that belonged to no group.
The Group grew and street rodas were seen in Dallas constantly with the group growing with many Capoeiras arriving from Brazil to Dallas that belonged to other great Capoeira Groups to help out in amicable manner to grow and share their experiences. The help came from students that had learned from their respectful Mestres back in Brazil. Mestres such as No, Canhao, Burgues and Cobra Mansa. Within time I moved back to Laredo and the group split into different groups of angola and regional. Where today Capoeira in Dallas and Texas grew immensely with the initiation of the group with no name. The group had a street roda every second Sunday in downtown Dallas where the group grew with new visions of Capoeira and a direction of helping one another.
I Since then the growth has been seen by Mestre Acordeon showing his affection to the group and adding gasoline to the small flame, which is now raging.
With the added fuel of Mestre
Acordeon the group has sprung back to life. Understanding our position he is the only person that tells us to search and experience with respect all the groups of Capoeria to gain a better understanding of the art.
Now we have a visible growth with children in our group. Which is seen with great enthusiasm and clarification to this wonderful art.
Having made many dear friends in this gratuitous martial art. We have been helped by another great Mestre of Capoeira.
His help was greatly appreciated since he showed the values of Contemporary Capoeira Regional. His knowledge on the art is immense and it shows in his character.
During his stay the Mayor of Laredo honored his work for helping Laredo enjoy the Brazilian Martial Art of Capoeira. Especially in the street setting.
This is the story of this group of
Capoeria. The fundamentals come from those
Mestres who cared to give us a helping hand . For those interested please do not hesitate in contacting us our
doors are open to all.
A quick street Roda on 4th of July with some of the group who was in town.
During this Roda we gathered the strength to finally name the group. After the Berimbau rhythm of Samango; Meaning Monkey. This was named so after seeing little monkeys play from a feral position to a respectful attitude that Capoeira brings out. Our Children's Capoeira has taken new grounds with several satellite clubs of Grupo Samango reaching out to the youth of Laredo. This brings me great joy that this Brazilian art is making children of the Rio Grande filled with smiles.
